Martha G. Scott - Democrat State Senator Martha G. Scott, a Democrat from Highland Park, was elected by Special Election in 2001 to the Michigan Senate for the 2nd District, which, after redistricting, includes portions of Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Harper Woods, and the Grosse Pointes. She is currently in her second full term, which will expire in 2010. Senator Scott began her public service career in 1972 as a Precinct Delegate. In 1977, she was appointed to the Wayne County Board of Commissioners. In 1979, she served as Vice-Chair of the Wayne County Civil Service Commission. From 1984 to 1987, she was President of the Highland Park City Council. In 1988, she was elected the first woman Mayor of Highland Park, making her the first African American woman elected Mayor of a Michigan city. |

Deb Cherry- Non Partisan Senator Cherry has served her community with distinction for over thirty years. The Oakland University graduate got her start in politics as a teenager as a member of a non-partisan student group. Since that time she has been active in politics as a volunteer, manager of campaigns, as a candidate, and as an elected official. After earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resources Development with a concentration in Manpower in 1976, she worked with the Valley Area Agency on Aging managing grants and working to find funding for various agency services. In 1988 Deborah was elected to the Genesee County Commission, where she represented the 3rd District for six years and served three years as Commission Chair. During this time she earned her Masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Michigan-Flint. Elected to the Senate in 2002 and 2006, she is a member of the Senate Appropriations committee, serving as Minority Vice Chair on the sub-committees for Community Health and Retirement. |
